UGFs don't work that well with plants so if you have a power filter stick with that, or an internal filter for that size tank. When you say sand or gravel do you mean onyx sand or flourite, or do you mean plain sand or plain gravel. Ithink plain gravel might be a little bit better than plain sand, but if at all posible i would try to get flourite, onyx sand or eco-complete.

On that note, I'm noticeing ALOT of plant growth with Shultz Aquatic Soil from Home Depot. $6 isn't a bad price as far as I can tell..

hey avalon, i got the onyx substrate and 10g, and it seems that 15lbs of onyx sand doesnt fill much of the tank, maybe 1-1.5 in. is that what you had?

Yes, that sounds about right. I currently have another 10g set up with onyx. This time I used 1.5 bags. Much better, but not absolutely necessary. I didn't have problems with anything not holding with just 1 bag.

Thank you for posting this! I have been wanting to try live plants. I think I'm going to try in my 20g first before I try the 55g. Is it safe to change substrate and plant live plants in a tank that is already populated?
