new 50 gallon community tank advice

Sounds like a great plan. I do like multiple filters in the event one of them poops out on you, plus you can transfer well seeded filters to a new setup to 'instantly' cycle it. I'd skip the SAEs for this size tank. I've got 2 in my community 55g and they're hotdog sized.

    Kuhli loach with guppies

Yep, like arcab4 said, sinking food is a good option for them, as is feeding them after lights-out so the other critters in the tank don't get to it first. That's how I feed some of my corys, depending on what other piglets.. er.. I mean fish are in with them.

    Is she pregnant

Sure looks it! Might wanna re-home her if you want a bunch of platys. If you have enough plants and hiding spots, some fry may survive (being eaten).

    Test Kit Recommendations

You've got marine stuff too? Hats off to you! Yeah, not sure what the differences are, but the API kits are different for fresh water and marine.

    Help with API T.C. Tetracycline?

An established tank with fish should never stink, nor should your filtration media. If it does stink, you're not keeping up with proper water changes. Weekly water changes of 50% or more is typical and absolutely needed for most tanks.

    Siphon hose extenstion?

Yep. Missing it by 8ft. Story of my life. LOL!

    Betta has Fin Rot

I'd skip the salt and don't have experience with meds because I've never used/needed them. Keep up on water changes to keep nitrates as low as possible. Low nitrates speeds healing.

    Test Kit Recommendations

Yep. Another vote for the API master test kit. They're about $30 at pet places, but will last years. You can get them by mail order cheaper if you have the time.

    Kuhli loach with guppies

Yeah, the wrong male/female ratio can lead to aggression issues with guppies. Something like 3 females per 1 male would be a bit calmer. They shouldn't die from just fin nipping. Make sure you keep up on your weekly water changes. Clean water with low nitrates makes healing happen fast...

55 gal mixed planted - clouded, help

Petco is running it's $1/gal sale, so a 10g would be great for a male betta or a few female bettas. I personally prefer a group of female bettas.

    Platy Question - illness

Even just a few platys in a 10g are going to require the tank have weekly water changes. Given you've only been doing 50%, once a month, nitrates will be extremely high in that tank. High nitrates very much weakens fish's immune systems and makes them easy targets for health issues. The...

    New 55g Tank

Maybe something like labs. Probably 12-15 of them?

    Platy Question - illness

Looks like a cute little male platy. What size is this tank and do you measure for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? What is your weekly water change amount? First thing I'd do is measure your water parameters. If you don't do water changes, which is a very bad thing in the long run, I'd do...

    Changing gravel

My main focus would be to preserve your existing filtration. You should be able to completely swap over to new substrate and not effect your nitrogen cycle at all, provided you used the same established/seeded filters on the new setup. I've switched over to complete new setups, just using...

    New 55g Tank

I do agree African cichlids can be fun because of their personalities and activity level although it's been since the 1980's that I've kept them (and I kept them poorly then!). S.American cichlids are also very personable.

55 gal mixed planted - clouded, help

Yeah, but the key to the matter is, all the filtration and gravel vacumming in the world won't help an over stocked tank. More water volume and more frequent and larger water changes will.

    Setting up a new tank

Keres- You brought up an oldie thread for sure, but it's all good. Are you sure this terrarium tank was intended to be an aquarium? Some reptile and terrarium tanks are not. It should have decent top/bottom frames and center braces if larger than 30-40g. You could test fill it...

Non Aquatic Plant Species To Avoid

Oh yeah. I got bit by the Petco "aquatic fern" back in 2013. I've got a thread floating around somewhere on this site about it. lol.

55 gal mixed planted - clouded, help

Yeah, that's a grossly overstocked tank, so water quality concerns are going to be an issue. I'd try to re-home the common pleco and comet like said. I've seen common plecos so big, they can't easily turn around in a 55g tank. I've seen some pretty big common or comet goldfish too...

    College and Fish

Look online for any local aquarium groups. I know I was surprised to find several in my area, one of which is on facebook. I've given stuff away in a matter of hours using the FB local aquarium group.
