50-70% water changes is quite a lot for such a small tank. but hey...another reason to get a bigger tank.

i think any physical issues with the molly will take some time to heal. but if you continue with the water changes, you'll give the molly the best chance to recover by the improved water conditions.
how are the nitrates level now?

the water changes are good but can't do them too often. but should continue to change the water.
i think most people always start out with the 10 gallon. i think i still have my 10 gallon in the garage somewhere. 29 is a good size to move onto.
schooling fish in quantities of 7-9 will look great in your tank.
i'd also go with playtlover's suggestion about the corycats...great addition to...

to deal with the heat, i've seen people take water bottles. freeze them and then float them in the tank. it acts basically like a giant icecube. but you'll need to monitor the temperature to make sure it doesn't drop too quickly or too much.
