The Tiger Shovelnose Cat, which is also known as the Tiger Catfish, is from the rivers and tributaries of South America. It is a large catfish that can attain a length of over 3 feet in captivity. The body of this cat is long and slender and has a beautiful silver coloration. Black stripes and spots cover the entire body, giving this fish a tiger-like appearance. The mouth is adorned with very long whiskers, and is long and flat in shape.
It can grow impressively large in an aquarium setting and should be given plenty of room to swim. Due to its size and high energy this fish should be kept with larger tank mates. Besides the minimum tank size of 180 gallons, rocks, plants, and large driftwood should be used to enhance and simulate a natural environment. Since the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish is a highly active fish, a tightly covered aquarium should be used to prevent it from jumping out of the tank.
Little is known about the breeding habits of the Tiger Shovelnose Catfish, but it is speculated that the females have a fuller stomach and overall shape.
Feeding the Tiger Shovelnose Cat is not difficult due to the fact that it is not a picky eater. In the wild, this fish will eat fish and crustaceans. In the aquarium setting, assorted worms, frozen foods, sinking catfish pellets, and dry foods will provide the proper nutrition.

What a great fish. Although suggested that we not keep it in our guppy tank, at the time there was no option. He gets along well with the guppies. There has been no noticable decline in the guppy population. He’s been in the tank for months now. I’m sure I wouldn’t want him with the young fry, but from two to three month old guppies have been okay with this peaceful fish.
the shovel nosed catfish is a great fish to have. they are active, good looking and more or less easy to take care of. they can also be kept with many different types of fish, givin the right sized tank mates and tank. they are happier in at least pairs. i keep my 2 in a 240g with a pacu, tiger shovelnose, red tailed cat, clown knife, and an oscer. theyre about a foot right now, theyll be moved to there bigger tank soon!
i bought a tiger shovelnose 2 days ago. hes about 4 inches, has great color, and is making a great tankmate for my clown knifefish. hes also in the tank with a tiger oscar. believe it or not everyone is getting along. i havent tried frozen foods, but he seems to like guppies. ive been promised that when he gets big he’ll have great markings. so far very pleased with him. highly recommend.
I was given my Shovel Nose. I was @ my local fish store when he came in. Pathetic. Tiny & all red. They told me take him he probably won’t make it. Ha Ha. I put him in a 10, treated him with pimafix. A couple of weeks later noticed my endlers were disappearing. The last straw was discovering he had eaten a bumblebee goby. He went into a 30. No casualties there. I saw how rapidly he was growing so I decided to put him in my 90 with cichlids other cats & bichirs. He has grown from11/2 ‘ to 7′ in 3 months! They are fine so far. I also have a lima cat & they hang out. He isn’t interested in frozen but stuffs himself with shrimp pellets. This fish is cool but I don’t want him dining on my cichlids. He scares the crap out of me. Every morning I’m doin the fish count!
