Hey guys I've been reading up on some of this nano-saltwater tank articles and am concidering trying it out. I want a large salt eventually, but from what I've read this is the best place to start. What is the main things I need? I know a filter, powerhead, and lots of lighting is required, but does the filter need carbon just like freshwater? does the lighting need a hood (to prevent jumpers from escaping, I've seen many nano salts with just the lighting strip)? Protein skimmers, what are they and what are they used for? Live rock, I've seen tanks use a lot of this stuff, what is it? I'll stop there. I know I can find most of this stuff on the net and I'm currently looking at it, but I knw that here most of you guys have a good knowledge of this and would give me the fastest response w/ some of the best advice. Meanwhile I'm off to do more research! Thanks a lot guys!

Well ill try to get it all in (form what I know which is alot less then what come other people like sreef and camaro say when they see this thread, but ill give it a shot)

Lighting: You can use a regular light strip you just wont be able to get corals and do a FOWLR tank. If you want you could purchase a cheap like 30 watt light and just go with a open top. they hay nice lights at www.hellolights.com

filter: you dont a filter because the biological filtration of liverock will do it for you, you just need alot of live rock (which is rock you buy that has living organisms that will help in the filtration of your tank) and good water movement (from powerheads) and you should be fine. Also you wont need a skimmer on a nano tank. I

well, first off: a nano tank is not the best starter option. you would be much better starting with something in the 55-90 range because it is much easier to keep water quality stable

if you look in the general saltwater thread you will find a sticky called "what will i need for a SW tank" or something along those lines...its a very good place to start to get these basics answered.
