Yes I have T-12 bulbs in there. I'm familiar with T-8 and T-5 setups but didn't see the need to spend the money. My T-12 bulbs are $5 for the pair at Lowes. Its hard to beat that.
I think if anything I'd add another pair of T-12s in there if I can find a way to make them fit. At that point though I believe the heat is going to be to much in that trapped area and I'll have to put a vent in the back of the hood possibly with a small extraction fan too.
I should take some temp readings to confirm this though.

My tank is 24" deep.

So not to get to side tracked. You think upgrading the bulbs and adding CO2 will increase plant growth and ultimately get rid of that black ball algae in the tank?

well that is one solution. An easier one might be keep an eye on nitrates and do water changes. Keeping nirates low should slow the growth of the algea
