Shrinking tail?

Is it possible for a male's tail to shrink? I had a male and female in my tank and added two more females and one male. The male who was there first hides in a cave most of the time and I noticed today that his tail has gotten smaller. Is this a naturally occuring thing or is he getting abused but the other swordtails? I have not seen any aggression by any of the sword to one another.

his tail is probably be nipped by the other fish. If possible move him to his own tank and add some salt

It can be one of the two things:

1) He could be getting nipped.

2) Fin rot. Does it look ragged by any chance? If there is a reddish color along the edges, that may be bacterial. If it's whitish or cottony, it may be fungal.

one of my guppies had fin rot it takes all the colour of of the tail so it looks like white lines proberbly that.
