Hey all
Anyone got any suggestions on good fish description / research books, i am fairly new to the hobby and it would be nice to find a book that describes the different type of fish, their habitat, social behaviour, dietry needs etc so that when planning to add to my tank i know that i am getting the correct fish and not ones because they look nice.

Fresh or Marine? I'll assume fresh. A lot of people swear by the Baensch atlas's, and they are pretty reliable. Start with one and build up, or get 5, the photo atlas. You have to accept that for a lot of more 'modern' fish these books are lacking, and you oft have to go to more specialist tomes.
It wouldn't hurt most aquarists to read Fenners Conscientious Marine Aquarist. Yes it's marine, and the equipment section is dated, but it can really show you the way to think succesfully.

Think my first book was Beginner's guide to freshwater aquariums....it's by Dick Mills. Easy to read, loads of pics. Only briefly goes over diseases, water quality, etc, but a good starter for lots of fish descriptions. All other beginner books are much of a muchness IMO......same fish descriptions, same skimpy disease descriptions.
Best buy I did after that was the Handbook of Fish diseases....way OTT for the average aquarist (eg, me) as it goes into how to do post mortems etc, but really great flow charts for finding out why the fish have turned that weird colour or acting strange. Can't remember who it is by though.....sorry. Lots of colour pics as well. This was 15 years ago though, so not sure if its still in print?

Oh yeah....seen a nice book recently on 'aquarium landscapes' or something.......great pics of 'natural' tank set-ups for different fish, with ideas on materials to use for the aquascaping and which fish to have in them. Can't remember the name of the book though.
Hmm memory is going a bit. Now where did I leave my glasses?:D
