Pictus Catfish stuck in net

I just recieved a 43gal tank a couple weeks ago. I was transferring fish from one tank to another. Then when I finally caught my Pictus Catfish he got stuck in the net. He stuck his fins into the netting and was stuck. I had to cut the net to get him loose. In the process he tore up his fins but he swims fine even though he has tiny pieces of net on his fins. He doesn't act like he is hurt so I guess he is fine. I will remove the net from his fins soon.

Jeez thats bad luck.My Cory got a little entangled once but it was easy to get out.A Pictus is a bit more of a handful I imagine.

Yeah it was hard to get out but we finally got it. It was especially hard because he was constantly thrashing around while I was trying to cut off the net.

All i can say is YIKES!! Hope he recuperates okay. You must have a steady hand.

He is recovered although he still has the net on his fins. He doesn't seem to be hurt. He is acting the same as he was before the net incident.

I'm curious as to how you are going to get the net off his fins?

I will cut it off soon, probably within the next week. But I am not in a hurry because he doesn't seem to be hurt and he swims fine.

YIKES! how are you going to cut it off without cutting his tail?

It isn't on his tail it is on both of his side fins. I am not sure what the fins are called. He seems to be fine so I may not cut it off it will be risky.

id try to pick it off with a pair of hemostats or something before u cut it, might be a little less dangerous for him, but im sure if u give it time he'll get it off himself

I might try to slip it off with tweezers. Just so I don't amputate his fins, or worse.

Next time keep in mind that they and other guys like them (upside-downs) need to be caught by shrimp net. It could've be much worse if his barbels got stuck.

I work at Wal-Mart and we don't use nets to catch any kind of Cat fish. why dont you try a (we call them specimin cups) you kind of coks him in to it and pick it up out.

My pictus is extremely fast and smart. He doesn't want to be caught I think a cup would be harder. What is a shrimp net?

Even dead pictus can get stuck in a regular net, it happened to me (the removal was guesome).

A shrimp net is a finer net I believe.

I hope your pictus recovers from the ordeal (which luckily it sounds like it is).

A shrimp net is made of thicker and softer threads which are very tightly woven. So it is very easy on barbeled and spiky guys and on fry. You will see it in a net department of any store - it is usually white.

Hi, im new on here.I have a 29 gallon tank with 6 cichlids,2 plecos,and 1 catfish.It is very new and almost done cycling. I had a cat fish do the same thing,His side fins are very sharp bones and they were stuck in the net.I had to cut up the net and he still has a small piece on one fin,his fin is all chewed up with white cloudy stuff on it.It happened about a week ago.But he is acting fine and swimming all around.He is a tough little guy and one of the oldest fish in there.Im afraid to get teh small piece off because im sure ill cut him up more trying to get it off.

YAY!! The pictus got the net off of its fins by itself. HOORAY!!

Yeah my catfish is doing good now.His fin fell off with the net and a new fin is growing back.His whisker is also growing back.Hes a tough little b******!I also have a blue cichlid with a white eye though.
