In a 55? Nothing. He will not like anything as large as he is in a tank that size and the size of the tank won't support it. Anything smaller is apt to get eaten.

As for maybe a bottom feeder like a pleco...well one that wouldn't over load the biological abilities of the tank will be small enough to end up on the lunch menu.

If you really want a Dempsey look into the electric blue Dempsey. They don't get as big as normal Dempseys, are a LOT more peaceful. You could easily fit 2 or 3 in there. They do require soft water with a low PH to be healthy long term.

There are plenty of tetras you could put in with angels. Afterall, many of them come from the same environment as angels. You just need to be mindful of compatability (i.e., neons would be snacks, some tetras are nippy, too large, too aggressive.....) 'Tetras' is a widely encompassing group.

So long as the tetras are too tall to easily fit into an angel's mouth, you can consider them. One tetra I think is underrated are lemons -- a school of those is really pretty. Rummynoses are very cool as well, especially in a planted tank.

Other fish you can consider with angels in a 55 -- swordtails, cories, hatchetfish.......
