I have been turning the temp down on the RBP tank, trying to get them to calm down.(I was trying to get them to spawn) The male has been tearing up the female mostly on her gillplate just in front of the gill. I have been treating with melafix and the temp is down to 78. Going to turn it down to 76 but don't want to go much lower than that.

Is there anything els i can do to deter them from spawning behavior?

Temp is at 75 and they finally calmed down. Female is chewed up kinda bad. Think i better wait untill next spring before i try spawning again.

Sorry to hear your troubles, but glad to hear they've calmed down some.

I know nothing of these fish, but mabey include more hidding places for the female to get away from the male?

I used to have cover for them when they were juvies and more of a threat to each other. They have a tendency to chew up/destroy artifical plants, and they are prone to fright responses. I'm afraid that if i keep something large and solid in there that eventually they will run into it and hurt themselves or ram the object into the tank and break it.. AAAAAAAAAAA!
