I saw a bonded pair of a goby and a shrimp today at the fish store. What sucks is I'm a month away from keeping fish until the tank fully stabilizes... this would be ideal for my tank because I just want one small fish, and the goby and the shrimp are great to watch.

I was wondering how common it is to find a bonded pair of goby and shrimp at the LFS?

Yeah...on occasion they come in. You could also pair them yourself when one of each comes in. LFS are pretty good for custom ordering this kinda stuff. Just ask.

yeah, I've heard it's difficult to match em up, and it happens largely due to chance, at least from what we understand about the relationship. the lfs owner told me she's seen the shrimp go through two molts, so there's a chance they may still be around when my system is ready. i hope so, though they're 60 bucks. what do you guys think, a decent deal or a rip-off?

if you do try to pair your own i believe you are supposed to create a burrow for the shrimp and add it first then add the goby. aresgod may have done this so you might ask him.

price seems a bit high, usually the gobies are about $15-20 and the shrimp are about $15-20...though perhaps they are charging you based on the pair relationship as well...also, it could depend on the shrimp. there are several fancier Alpheus shrimp which retail for closer to $35

they pair up in the wild to avoid predators, so i guess unless they have something to avoid the wont bother pairing up. maybe you could try randomly lunging at the tank :D
