submariner: don't worry about me being the guy that only knows one song via tabs...I read music already (piano) and I wouldn't think of trying to learn an instrument without learning the various notes
fishtrap and kahluazz:
I already have pretty well decided I want a Gibson like guitar...I like classic rock, folk rock, and blues (think Clapton, B.B. King, The Who, Allman Brothers Band, etc) mostly so I think either a Les Paul or a SG is what I am after...I am thinking I might just get one of the Epiphone SGs to start with as they seem to be a good option for a couple reasons:
1) relatively cheap (not sure how serious about this I am going to get)
2) easily upgradeable
As far as amps, I have always liked the sound of a Marshall Stack, but I probably don't need anything crazy as I will most likely be playing with myself for a long time so I am thinking maybe something in the 10 to 15w range
Again, thanks all!
