The Zebra Danio boasts an instantly recognizable striped, zebra pattern. A perennial favorite of freshwater enthusiasts, Danio rerio is either silver or gold with five uniform blue/purple stripes that stretch horizontally from the gill to the end of the tail. The Zebra Danio is a highly active swimmer, especially when kept in small schools.
Native to the Ganges region in Eastern India, wild Zebra Danios are found in a variety of habitats, ranging from fast-moving streams to slow-moving, nearly stagnant ponds. In the home aquarium, this member of the Cyprinidae family prefers a well-planted aquarium with large open swimming areas. For best care, keep this peaceful fish in small schools with equally non-aggressive fish. Since they are omnivores, feed the Zebra Danio a varied diet of flake and frozen foods.
Male Zebra Danios are generally more torpedo shaped, while females tend to have a larger belly. Generally, male Zebra Danios spawn with and remain loyal to one female. A breeding pair should be placed in a breeding aquarium with fine-leaved plants for them to spawn over. Roughly 300-400 eggs are produced and hatch within two days. The fry should be fed small pieces of live foods, such as brine shrimp.

the actual origin is India and not USA as mentioned above. Please correct it.
Zebra Danios were one of the first fish I owned when I entered the hobby 20 yrs ago. They were also one of the first egg layers I ever spawned.
This fish is as easy as it gets. They are hardy, inexpensive and can handle most mistakes by beginners. They are a great fish to start with or to stick with if you want to remain with simplicity
Just got a 10g setup for about 2 months at this time. Things are going well and I am enjoying my 6 zebra danios. Feel free to check out my fish tank set up!
heey, just wondering what fish are suitable to go in with a male fighter fish??
Bought 2 zebra and 2 leopard danios for my new tank recently, and now have about 40 babies in the ‘hatchery’ tank inside the main one. They didn’ t waste any time. Only noticed I had babies when doing a gravel vac and I’d put 3 buckets down the bath, then saw fry in the 4th. Oops. Sorry little ones.. Anyway, saved the last load, and have no idea how many are still hiding in the main tank. Will see in a few weeks I guess when they grow.
Lesson learnt – keep the plug in the bath when doing water changes, and check the water before I let it go..
I just got 2 zebra danios from the fish store, they came in a dark yellow crappy water bag and did just fine and lived. That shows how hardy these fish are, and since I am a beginner to the hobby it is defiantly nice to see them happy as can be in my 10 gal tank even if I am not running everything perfect yet!
They are cool looking and fun to watch as well.
Con: Hard to get a photo of, they never stop moving!
