The Buffalo Head Cichlid orginates from the Congo River basin in Africa. It’s sometimes also known as the Lionhead or Blockhead cichlid.

Because of the swift water movements in the Congo River, these cichlids have developed a jerky style of swimming. It’s similar to those of a goby.

Buffalo Head Cichlid are friendly and peaceful. They grow to a maximum size of 4″ so plan your tank accordingly. Buffalo Head Cichlid are blue/black/grey and tan in colors. Male Buffalo Head Cichlid develop a large hump or bump on their head as they grow older.

Keep Buffalo Head Cichlid in at least a 30 gallon tank with rocks for hiding places. They can be fed a variety of flakes or meaty food.

Buffaloheads were one of the first cichlids I ever spawned. They spawned regularly inside a flowerpot like the Kribensis. They are good community fish up to a point. Since they don’t have a strong swim bladder they are bottom dwellers and are very agressive towards other bottom dwellers like catfish, especially during spawning. My pair ran a Bichir out of the tank were it died on the floor. So in a community setting keep them with top and mid-level dwelling fish and you should do okay.
