I'm in NYC without A/C in the summertime. My poor fish I think is feeling it.

How do I keep the temperature within a tropical temperature range?

The tank gets a little bit of sunlight during the day, not enough to cause algae but enough to shoot the water temp up to the point where its off the scale on the thermometor. There is a fan that blows over the top but it doesn't do enough to keep the water cool. When I get home from work, if its really hot I float a baggie of ice on the top, let it melt and keep putting them in slowly till I get the temp down. This takes a long time though.

is there any other way to keep the temp cool enough in the summer?

Remove the heater from your tank.

Remove the hood from your tank (unless you have known jumpers) to promote evaporation.

Add an airstone to the tank (this will help promote more evaporation).

Do a two gallon cold water "refresh" every day.

Good luck.
