Well, i am planning on setting up a new 10g nano-reef, this time using an RO unit. I have always used tap water. I have seen a tap water filter that makes deionized water and was wondering how good this would be for a nano-reef tank, if i am short on money could i purchase this?

I aslo heard that it is much better then just plain RO water.

For lighting i am getting this:

And i am planning on getting this skimmer but im not sure if a really need one on this small of a tank

If not, i will go with one of these two power filters with just chemi-pure :

For the heater i am getting this:

I am still deciding on a powerhead, what should its gph rating be? I was looking at rio, but i heard they can kill off a entire tank. I was also looking at via aqua. Any ideas?

For sand, i just purchased 10 pounds of estes ultra reef marine sand, i am going to seed it with 2 pounds of live tonga sand, that would be 12 pounds, will this be ok?

For live rock, i am going to use 10 pounds of premium fiji, maybe more?

Here is a list of corals i will keep under the 65w 12k daylight PC
Ricordea Mushroom
Tree Coral
Zoanthids
Fuzzy Mushrooms
Green Star Polyps
Button Polyps
Toadstool Mushroom Leather
Candy Cane frag - LPS
Hammer frag - LPS

Inverts:
4 Blue leg Hermits
3 Turbo Snails
1 Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

Fish:
1 Ocellaris Clown
1 Blue Neon Goby
1 Firefish

Let me know what you think, i hope you can help!

Turbo snails get big and can knock over corals. I'd swap them out for astreas, maybe mix em up with ceriths too.

Be sure you cover your tank for the gobies. I learned the hard way...

If you don't want a glass canopy because of the heat/salt creep issues, try this:

try covering you tank with that white egg crate stuff (light diffuser) available in the lighting section of your hardware/home improvement store (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc)
Wish I had thought of that before I found my firefish on the carpet! heh heh

I'm no coral expert, but one thing I've looked out for is the ones that spread out stingers, especially the really long 6" ones. they can wipe out a lot in a nano...

I guess I'd go for the skimmer if you have the money for it. Personally, I don't use one, but my tank is only a month and a week old. I use a paper towel to collect the foam off the top and do weekly or biweekly 1-2 gallon WC's.

Premium fiji is cool, I got a piece of that, really nice stuff. I have 8 or 9 pounds now, really nice, porous, bacteria-rich stuff, and I kept it low so I can get frags of corals later on down the road.

I use a ghetto wal-mart powerhead. After the first two days when it gagged and kicked, it's been fine. I believe I didn't have the intake cone locked into place properly. Mine is 170 gph, and I have a penguin HOB too. This makes more than adequate current.

With three fish, keep up the water changes. Though I just only got started myself, that seems like a large bioload, especially if you're going to have a lot of corals.

Good luck!

i think you are over stocking with fish, other than that it looks fine...wouldn't run the HOB filters and i am not a big fan of media/chemical solutions anyway, i would just use powerheads. probably don't need the skimmer either...the filter unit you are looking at is, imo, a waste of money...rather, i would look into purchasing either a real RO/DI unit (with the money you will save on the filters and skimmer) or buying your water from the LFS

your light is probably going to look pretty yellow but should be pretty good for coral growth
