My 20 gallon tank has 5 golden white cloud minnows, 3 albino corydoras, a golden mystery snail, a ghost shrimp, and my favorite, a Banjo Catfish. It's also set up with an aquaponics bio-filter that I've made myself. Lighting comes from my grow light, and I clean any detritus with a net to the best of my ability. Black sand on bottom, a few hiding places, and one aquatic plant.

I can add more tank pictures later but I just cleaned and since its sand its all a little cloudy. They are exactly what you think, just the Tupperware containers filled with fish tank rock. I don't actually add fertilizers. When I first started it and my tank was cycling I added a Kelp based fertilizer, but now it's just the nitrates in the water that feed the plants. I actually haven't thought of using low light plants lower down and I might try that. Thanks for the idea! arcab4, thanks, It isn't incredibly hard to set up, but it took a while to get it right. It was a trial and error and I'm still working out some kinks. The upkeep is a not too bad. Cleaning is a little difficult. I don't have anything filtering detritus out of I have to clean it out by hand. But as long as I have a healthy bacteria colony, my fish and my plants are happy
