Safety for small fish

I was wondering if it is necessary to cover up the intake valves of my filters? I haven't bought the fish yet but would i need to do that for some adf's and some dwarf puffers? I don't want my fish to get sucked up...

is the fish small enough to get sucked through the hole? most filters come with a little grate thing to attach to the bottom so this isnt usually a problem...i suppose if you had a really powerful filter it might become an issue with small fish, but i imagine in a 20 you need not worry

I often use plants to put around the intake, to hide them and to keep fish away from it.

A healthy fish with enough room shouldn't have any problem with a filter intake.
