If you plan on having coral you may choose not to have a filter. The filter will remove food from the water column that the coral would normally take up. Nothing wrong with that filter. I dont run any media on my SW tanks, not even a filter sock. I have a hob filter that I use for just flow. I do not have any media cartridge in it. From time to time when I reset or clean rock in the tank I will drop in a cartridge to help clear it if its very cloudy but its not used for anything else.
