Hi, I was wondering if anybody has or had bought power compacts for a planted aquarium.  I was thinking of buying some power compacts for my 20 gallon with possibly 2 36 watts or 40 watt bulbs.  Any idea which kelvin is good for plants 5300 or 6400?  Anybody have any good results with http://ahsupply.com/index.html or is it cheaper to DIY fluorescents at Home depot?

Looking at the site, anybody know why their 36 watt, 6400 K is cheaper?

I have powercompacts - a single 96 watt 5000K bulb.

A 5300K would be ideal for planted tanks. Kelvin rating doesn't make a difference for plant growth, but it does change the appearance of the tank - higher ratings have a brighter, whiter appearance whereas lower ratings (5000K) have a warmer, yellower appearance.

AH supply is good - I'd go there before I go to Home Depot.

i dont like the yellow either, i like the blue and white tones. they bring out more of the color in the fish.
