My first post--Do I need aquatic snails to cycle a new tank?

So I've had a betta for a couple months now, his name is Donnie, and I have him in a bowl that's about a gallon. Now, I know this is not ideal, but I knew his would be temporary until I got him a tank. So I have a new 5 gallon tank and all the fixins; heater, filter, conditioner, gravel, decorations, all that. So here comes my question. I've been reading up on how to cycle my tank to transfer Donnie from his bowl to the tank. I read that I need to let it filter for about two weeks, which is fine, but it also mentioned that after the two weeks I should add one or two aquatic snails. My question is, do I NEED to add the snails? Or will all of the other precautions be enough? I'd love to hear more tips and suggestions!
