Are lava rocks safe for aquariums? thanks.

I have read that they are but be careful where you get them. Make sure you wash them and I would recommend boil them before adding into a tank. Its better to be safe than sorry.

At work we have a 600 gallon cichlid display and a 4000 gallon marine shark display, both use lava rock, and in the 4000 gallon its at least a few tons of the stuff, so its safe.

lava rock is safe for aquariums, just watch the fish, they might scrape themselves if they get scared and crash into it.  :-/

Ownedbykitten, do you work at Big Al's?  Up here in Toronto they have a huge 800 gallon planted tank, and a 4000 gallon shark tank.
