When I was a kid in a one room country school there was a small fish bowl with one gold fish and I remember it froze solid one week end when no one tended the furnace. The gold fish survived.

I've seen creeks freeze nearly solid with just little pockets of water in the ice with fish in them, in the winter i'll keep my bait in a 5 gallon bucket and sometimes it freezes with just a small cavity of liquid water in it and the baitfish survive in there. but that stuff happens gradually. with this sudden shock freezing i would think it would seriusly hurt or kill the fish.
