Ive had my betta for 10 months, he just got over dropsy thanks to some tablets from the pet store, he's looking much better. Ive read they live up to 3 yrs, then I read somewhere else they live 1 or 2. Anyone know for sure?!

Bettas live on average 3-4 years, with a maximum of about 5 years, with the proper care and water quality. If you've bought your betta from an LFS figure that he is probably already at least one year old by the time he has made it to the store.

Actually bettas can live up to 9 years. But you'd have to be a VERY good and knowledgeble betta owner for keeping them healthy and alive that long. There are other factors too.

Food- a good supply and variety will keep them healthy

Water- basic (or even advanced) maintenance will also preven health problems and infections.

Spawns- Spawning shortens the life span of female bettas. I am not too sure about males though.
