help! what is wrong with my puffer?

i know its not the greatest picture but my puffer has this cloudy bubble over his eye. what is it and how do i fix it??

It looks kinda like he has a frosted contact lens on 1 eye.

If it's just on one eye, it's likely from some physical damage. Is there anything sharp in the tank that he could have scraped it on?

As long as the water is clean, it should heal up on its own. You could add some Melafix, but it's probably not necessary.

HAHA, well put Lotus. I don't think I'd really want anything scraping my eye. When I looked at them, they dont really look sharp or rough.

It problably bump into one of the corner of the fake trunk but thats just my opinion

One of those spiky plants could have easily caught him in the eye

I know a lot of plastic plants are sharp. Before I put something in a tank I take a nylon sock or pair of panty hose and run over it, if it snags it won't go in the tank. I don't want any of the fish to get torn fins or scraped up if they chase each other.

That sometimes happens to my puffers if I don't mix their salt thoroughly before adding it to the water...or if when I am fluctuating the salinity and it's going UP...

it has happened to me a couple times. It's scary - but it does go away.

thanks kelly, im keeping an eye out. I tested my water again. everything is fine but my nitrites so i gotta do another water change today.

I'm thinking for some reason she spun into a mini cycle.
Readings Before Water Change:
Nitrate: 10ppm
Nitrite: 8ppm!
Ammonia: .5ppm

Readings after 75% Water Change:
Nitrate: Didnt Test
Nitrite: 1ppm
Ammonia: 0ppm

It's probably the huge logs of poo that the puffers make as opposed to the delicate little strings from the mollies *laughingc

Just curious... how big do puffers get? And what does 'brackish' mean?

Meghan These puffers get to be about 6 inches long. Brackish means, as a quick answer, half freshwater, half saltwater.

did another water change tonight...25%...salinity is now between 1.004 and 1.008. gonna retest nitrite in the morning


im getting so stressed out!
