Filter media?

OK,

PJ got me into plant tanks.  So I'm setting one up in my 20 gallon.  I used laterite and kitty litter as a base substrate with gravel on top of that.  PJ said the activated carbon would take the iron out of the water if I used it.  So...  What can I use in my filter to take the place of the carbon?

you don't need much other than a sponge or floss to trap the plant pieces... the plants will do most of the "chemical" filtration for you.  

i'm only using a powerhead and a prefilter in my 10g.. there's no need for anything else except some crushed coral if you've got soft water (low kH) and you want to inject CO2.
