filter maintaince?

ok so i have an eheim 2213 canister. I have had it for maybe 3 months now. Im about to buy another one but I want to know if there is something I should be doing to take care of the one I have right now? Should I be changing the pad? If so what pads do I use? How often do I need to change the media? What type of media is recommended? I have this canister on a 30 gal community tank.

I also use eheim canisters and clean mine out when there is a noticable slowing down of the flow.
By pads do you mean the foams? 8)

yes pads? foams? or floss whatever its called that seperates the types of media.

i stopped buying the pads from eheim. just go to your LFS and buy those filter floss that comes in a big bag and pack it in yourself. save alot more money that way. and you won't feel bad about throwing it away everytime.

ok so i can use any filter floss but what about the media does it ever need to be changed?

yup. u can use filterfloss. media..i've been using the same ones for almost a year now...i don't even know what i have. doh! hmm. i should find out. i clean them about every 3 months and they seem fine. my water quality hasn't suffered from not changing it.
