I have one pregnant Platy but I don't have a nursery or separate tank. Do i really need one?

Depends... she won't have a problem having the babies in the tank. The babies have a good chance of being eaten, but the more plants (real or fake) or other hiding spaces you have for them, the more likely some will survive. Which is really fine, because they will overpopulate in no time if every one survives.

Depending on the other fish in the tank (like big angels or any such that will munch larger babies), usually you get at least 1-2 from each batch to grow up. Which still overpopulates pretty quickly... but the more adults there are, the fewer babies survive each time. They get past the stage at which mom (or almost any other fish) will eat them pretty quickly.
