How hard are maroon red discus?

As hard as any other discus. Typically the strain of the discus has no effect on the keeping difficulty. Apart from some of the wilds.

In my opinion discus keeping is worked up more then it should be. As long as you preform frequent water changes and provide the correct diet you should have no problems. Just a little TLC.

Like CM said, they are not all that difficult as long as you meet certain requirements.

For most of them besides the wilds you can even keep them in hard water, as long as it isn't rift lake hard.
