In some sources that I've been reading they recommend a flowrate of 10xtank volume per hour of filter flowrate for goldfish tanks. Does that sound correct? That means for the 29 gallon tank I'm planning I need a 290 gph flowrate? That's going to cause a heck of a lot of current.

the flowrate should be just enuf that the fish actually try to exercise against the stream once in a while, if they struggle to come up on surface or avoid the area near powerhead etc , thats too much flow .
