I found a canster filter at my local thrift store. I looks like it was filtering salt water before. Would it make a difference if I ran it with fresh now? would the salt traped in the filter poison the fish?? And how loud are the aversge canster filter it would be in my bedroom :-/

Thx,

first, what kind of cannister filter is it? eheim? fluval?

if you want to use it..you would have to replace the media inside the cannister so you won't have to worry about the salt being trapped inside. give it a good washing also (the tubes etc).

cannister filters (i have an eheim) are VERY VERY VERY QUIET.

I concur; just rinse it out really well and replace the media and it'll do fine for a FW tank.
Fluvals aren't as quiet as Eheims, but they're still quiet enough to be able to sleep with the tank in the room (provided the impeller isn't all hosed up, but that's a different story). ;D ::) 8)
