A lfs is closing down nearby and they're getting rid of their equipment. It is a cheesy mall type one where no one has any information.

The maybe getting rid of their metal halide light though. I'm not sure how old it is, or the wattage.

Any idea what to expect to pay for this? It's probably around 175 watts or so, the pennant style.

Suggestions on what I should offer?

Phone Home Depot and find out at what price the MH light are priced. If nothing else, it will give you an idea how much it costs new. They you can barter with your lfs.

Metal halide bulbs from home depot is different from the one at LFS I believe.  The one's at home depot has a more yellowish coloring on top the the aquarium.  Check online stores and see how much there bulbs are.

True enough but I thought Space was looking at buying the fixture and not the bulb. Be careful with buying bulbs. There are so many around. Im not sure if MH has as many different bulbs as flourscents. I dont think so but I dont really know without looking into it.

Some people have bought metal halide fixtures and bulb at the greenhouse and it does pretty much the same job but it is more rectangular in shape (fixture).

Here are some sites for lighting other than the known online stores such as petwarehouse, thatpetplace, and bigals.

Try and look at different stores other than pet stores. We already know that pet stores can be more expensive.

I checked out a couple of hydroponic stores today. One tried to ask "what I was really going to use the light for. Wink wink" I think he was upset when I said an aquarium.

Bulbs ~$75 - ~$150. Fixtures ~$70 - ~$100. All in Canadian prices.

The one at LFS had been there foe awhile now. I 'm going to talk to the manager tommorrow about it and see what they want for it. I'm hoping to get it for roughly $75. From the way the store looks, it's been there for awhile, if you get my drift.

Why should he be mad?  It's business?  I know a lot of reefkeepers go to hydroponics stores for their metal halides!  You got a good deal there too.
