brown slime in filter

This stuff must've grown overnight because I haven't seen it before today. I dunno what it is, if its algae, bacteria, good, bad or what. Take a look:

What angel are we looking at the Filter at? It dosent look like Brown Algea. I dont know what it is. You may want to rinse the filter in some tank water to get it off.

its at like 45* angle. I'm gonna wash it off in the tank water right now cuz its slowin the flow down.

It is probably just fish muck. Rinse it off and you should be ok.

put it in tank water and scrub it off gently with a old unneeded toothbrush. Do not use tap water or scrub super hard or you will kill off the bacteria living on it.

Just rinse it off. I get that alot and it just does nothing except cause bad filtration. Like stated gently scrub it off with an unused toothbrush!

ok I filled a 5gal bucket halfway up with tankwater and just shook the thing. It all came off and the filter is flowing much better.

That gunk is just a buildup of dissolved organics that are solidifying, such as fish poo, excess food that decayed and dissolved into the water, etc. Another sign that PWC's may need to be made more often, or not gravel vac'ing enough. How old is the tank and what's your maintenance schedule?

tank is a little over a month old and i do 40% WC's once a week. I feed my fish twice a day, once in the morn and once at night.

Sounds like a good routine, maybe just feeding too much. I only feed 1 time a day, except my eel tank where I feed the eel bloodworms at night, and the others take part as well.

yeah i think im overfeeding a bit. I try to get enough food in there for everyone and probably get a little too much in there. but theres never really much left in the gravel cuz the rams peck it out throughout the day. I'll try feeding once a day and see how it goes. Thanks
