Description:
|
Common Name: Balansae
Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne crispatula var. Balansae
Light: Low to Very High
Co2: Not Essential to growth
Level of Difficulty: Easy
This crypt is originally from South Thailand and can be found in limestone rich waters, which gives rise to very hard water. As a result, this plant adapts well to hard water conditions.
Balansae has long, grassy leaves that can reach 20 to 24 inches in height or more. They are a rich green (though sometimes with a bronzed tint to them) and about three quarters of an inch to an inch wide. Well grown, adult specimens will display a rippled or dimpled texture that lends this plant a unique appearance. Once the plant reaches the surface, the leaves will cascade across the water level.
Although this plant does not require high light or Co2 to grow, it will grow fastest and look the most robust in moderate to high light with Co2 injection.
As with most cryptocoryne species, this plant is subject to “melt.” That is, if Cryptocoryne crispatula var. Balansae’s environment changes in regard to water parameters such as temperature, pH, light, etc., it will sometimes being to disintegrate. The leaves will turn transparent and will beging to melt into nothing. It is important not to give up on the plant and discard any remaining underground pieces. If left undisturbed, the plant will regenerate itself and grow back as healthy as before provided that the root systme goes undisturbed. Young crypts, or those newly added, are especially prone to this condition during the acclimation process. Occasionally, the crypt will melt for no apparent reason.
To propagate, separate any runners that extend from the main plant (young plants will be grown along the runner) and replant.
Due to Balansae’s height, it is appropriate for the background position in medium or larger aquariums.
