Description:
|
Common Name: Green Wendtii
Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne wendtii "Green"
Light: Low to Very High
Co2: Not Essential to growth
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Wendtiis are one of the most popular and widely available aquarium plants. They, along with other similar crypts, such as Wendtii "Bronze", have beautiful, lanceolate leaves with a slight puckering. Wendtii "Green" as its name implies, is a medium green in color.
This plant will do well in both low light aquariums, and higher light aquariums. If in higher light, the plant tends to grow flat out across the substrate and demonstrates more puckering in the leaves. In lower light, the plant grows more upright and has smoother leaves. In time, C. wendtii will grow quite lush and may need to be thinned from time to time but pulling smaller plants and cutting the runners which connect each bunch, then removing or moving those specimens.
In higher light, growth will be faster and the plant will not grow as tall, although in lower light aquariums, it can reach almost 10" in height.
Although some believe this plant to only fare well in soft water, C. wendtii adapts well to both very soft and very hard water and is tolerant of a wide range of pH.
As with most cryptocoryne species, this plant is subject to an ailment called "melt". That is,
if the environment of Cryptocoryne Wendtii "Green" changes in regard to water parameters such as temperature, pH, light, etc., it will sometimes being to disintegrate. The leaves will turn transparent and will beging to melt into nothing. It is important not to give up on the plant and discard any remaining underground pieces. If left undisturbed, the plant will regenerate itself and grow back as healthy as before provided that the root system goes undisturbed. Young crypts, or those newly added, are especially prone to this condition
during the acclimation process. Occasionally, the crypt will melt for no apparent reason.

none

I've had this plant for a little under a year. When there is little light, it grows tall, when there is a lot of light, its grows short. I like this plant because you never have to trim it, and it looks great. My fish love swimming through it.
