Description: Common Name: Bronze Wendtii

Scientific Name: Cryptocoryne Wendtii "Bronze"

Light: Low to Very High

Co2: Not essential to growth

Level of Difficulty: Easy

Bronze wendtiis are one of the most popular and widely available aquarium plants. They, along with other similar crypts, such as Wendtii “green”, have beautiful, lanceolate leaves with a slight puckering. Wendtii “bronze” as it’s name applies, has a golden brown hue to it, though it can also be quite red. It originates in Sri Lanka.

This plant will do well in both low light aquariums, and higher light aquariums. If in higher light, the plant tends to grow flat out across the substrate and demonstrates more puckering in the leaves. In lower light, the plant grows more upright and has smoother leaves. In time, [/I]C. wendtii[/I] will grow quite lush and may need to be thinned from time to time but pulling smaller plants and cutting the runners which connect each bunch, then removing or moving those specimens.

In higher light, growth will be faster and the plant will not grow as tall, although in lower light aquariums, it can reach almost 10” in height.

Although some believe this plant to only fare well in soft water, C. wendtii adapts well to both very soft and very hard water and is tolerant of a wide range of pH.

As with most cryptocoryne species, this plant is subject to “melt.” That is, if the environment of Cryptocoryne Wendtii "Bronze" changes in regard to water parameters such as temperature, pH, light, etc., it will sometimes being to disintegrate. The leaves will turn transparent and will beging to melt into nothing. It is important not to give up on the plant and discard any remaining underground pieces. If left undisturbed, the plant will regenerate itself and grow back as healthy as before provided that the root systme goes undisturbed. Young crypts, or those newly added, are especially prone to this condition during the acclimation process. Occasionally, the crypt will melt for no apparent reason.

Pros: Good description of a beautiful non green plant
Cons: No remarks about feeding

Love this plant, have a trio just in front of a small conch shell in my molly tank. Great contrast, to the internal pink of the shell. As they all came in plastic baskets, I cut the bottom out of the plastic, removed the wool with tweezers and a couple of toothpicks than planted them in my aquarium. It should be noted that the Bronze Wendtiis seem to like a deeper substrate than most folks keep in their aquariums. As a gravel user I built up the area a bit and added a fertilizer tab in the middle of the plant triangle and they have been growing great for the last two months. This is a 29G tank kit from Petsmart and I am using no CO2. The 2 corys and 3 otos I have keep excess food particles off the leaves and out of the rhizome area.

So, in a nutshell if you are looking for a "non-green" plant that can help offset an area or provide color contrast I highly recommend getting the basketed version of these cryptocornes (probably helped with the plant not having to go through the melting experience also, being in the basket for shipping that is.)
