Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, Community
Maximum Size: 5-6"
Minimum Tank Size: 40g
Temperature: 72-84F
Diet: Omnivorous, tendency toward meaty foods
Level of care: Easy
General Notes:
Like most rainbowfish, the Boesmani’s rainbowfish is a peaceful schooling fish that does well in most community tanks when kept in small groups, of preferably more than 5 individuals.
A concern for many is that interbreeding can occur when several different varieties of rainbowfish are kept. Males exhibit very vibrant colors during mating and also when showing dominance towards other males. Females are slightly duller but still exhibit great colors. Boesmani’s front halves can range from a light green to a dark blueish color, while their posterior halves can range from a light yellow to a deep orange/red. Males tend to be more richly colored and deeper-bodied.
Plenty of open swimming room is required, as well as places that provide cover. Boesmani’s thrive in planted tanks and provide a wonderful contrast to the greenery in one.
Also referred to as “Boesemani,” Boesemann,” Boesman,” etc.

I bought this fish from a LFS and they told me that although it was a schooling fish it would be ok with other rainbows... so i got 1 and a few other types of rainbow and it seems to be quite happy... i have had him for about a year now and he is still only about 3 in long (nowhere near what the profile says) but i suppose i could just have gotten a small one? in any case i love this fish so get one

Pros:

beautiful

Cons:

expensive, not as hardy as other big rainbows

These guys are slow growers. I've got four now, all three inches and slender. They take years to grow into the bright, egg-shaped fish that is often shown in pictures. They easily go for $10 each, so a school is hard to afford. They are also more sensitive of the larger rainbows (as opposed to "australian mutt rainbows"), I've had several die for no apparent reason. Otherwise, they are absolutely beautiful, some of my favorites.
