Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, Community
Maximum Size: 5-6"
Minimum Tank Size: 40g
Temperature: 72-84F
Diet: Omnivorous, with tendency toward meaty foods
Level of care: Easy
General Notes:
There are several natural color variations of this fish, but the most commonly available form seems to be the Goyder River color form.
M. trifasciata diplay deep red fins and a dark black band (which sometimes shimmers with blue hues) that runs horizontally across the fish’s lateral line. Melanotaenia really means “black“ and “band“. There is also a purple to blue irridescence throughout the rest of the body. Males develop darker, more vibrant coloring and are much deeper bodied than the females. During mating or flaring behavior, the males will display prominent strips of flourescent blue, purple, or white along the tops of their heads and backs.
Goyders are peaceful, active swimmers that prefer the middle and top levels of a tank. Colors seem to be best displayed in well planted tanks. Can be boisterous at times. As schooling fish, they should be kept in groups.
Their diet should include some vegetable matter and they seem to have a liking of live foods. They relish meaty foods such as bloodworms.
This fish is also referred to as a “Banded Rainbowfish,” which lacks the distinction of the specific color form.
This fish, as with many rainbowfish, is also sometimes blandly referred to as "Australian Rainbowfish." This title should be avoided, however, because most rainbowfish hail from Australia and the moniker specifies nothing significant.
Note: Due to this specie's ability to mate with other rainbowfish, care must be taken to preserve the purity of this species. If several rainbowfish species are to be kept together, the aquarist should be certain that the resultant offspring are not sold or given back to the pet store or other hobbyists. The gene pool of this beautiful fish could be threatened otherwise.
Picture displays flaring behavior. Note the bright blue that is forming along the males' heads.

The males have some of the most beautiful colors I have seen on FW fish. When they are displaying, eating, spawning, etc. the red on their bodies is magnificent, as is the ultraviolet coloration on the tops of their heads. It was amazing to see how much this fish's colors differed depending on attitude and activity. A group of 5 or more of these fish is really nice to look at. Loves to eat...a lot.
