Description:
|
Compatibility: Reef Safe
Maximum Size: 4-5 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 29 gallon
Temperature: 78-82F
Diet: Picky Eater
Level of care: Hard/Difficult
General Notes: The Cleaner Wrasse is without doubt the most well known among the Wrasses because of its cleaning abilities of parasites off other fish. When approached by a Cleaner Wrasse the host fish will remain stationary with fins spread wide open in a head up or down manner so that the Cleaner Wrasse can see any parasites more clearly. The Cleaner Wrasse is smaller than the other Wrasses seen in the aquarium trade and is without question a great addition to any saltwater aquarium.

The cleaner wrasse, while a great looking fish which has a truly fascinating behavior pattern, simply does not belong in the home aquarium. Because of their reliance on parasites as a food source they are extremely difficult to keep alive. This is simply one of those fish which should be left in the ocean.

Pros:

Cleans Parasites off fish
|

Cons:

Will starve to death over the course of a few weeks

People incuding myself are drawn to this species because of its low price, interesting colors and its behavior. 99.9% of these fish die after a few weeks in captivity, and I definatly do not recommend this to anyone. If you need something to clean the parasites off your tank get a cleaner shrimp.
