yellowtang

Description: Compatibility: Reef Safe
Maximum Size: 5-7 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 60 gallon
Temperature: 78-82F
Diet: Accepts all types of food
Level of care: Easy
General Notes: The Yellow tang belongs to the family Acanthuridae, which includes surgeonfishes, tangs, and unicornfish. The species name means yellow and the hawaiians name for the yellow tang is Lau'Ypala which means yellowed-ti-leaf. The yellow tang is a bold grazer that will feed on nearly anything that is green, including algae, grass, lettuce, seaweed, etc. It is one of the more popular saltwater species, especially for the beginners because of its bold yellow color and inexpensive price tag. In the wild the yellow tang inhabits the area below the surge zone in coral-rich areas of the reef and lagoons. They are usually found individually or in loose groups. In the aquarium they should be kept individually or in groups of 4 or more.

Pros: Colorful, great swimmer
Cons: often aggressive, territorial

This is a great fish to keep in a big tank, he\'ll get rid of algaes and is always active. Can swim backward with ease, twist itslef when entering caves, loves to find holes in the live rock and create patterns. Extremely fast. Can raise his dorsal fins. Eats all kind of food, not only vegetarian diets..but his favorite food is Nori. Has a sleeping ground and is territorial.
Has razor blades he uses to attack of defends itself.
Has a symbiotic friend, the scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp. Very fun fish to watch. Has a night pattern : brown patched on the side of the belly and white strips.

Pros: Cool shape and color...also fairly cheap
Cons: Can be aggressive

All around hardy fish...eats algaes like most other tangs...give it a large enough tank 55+gallons and it should do fine.

Pros: Active Swimmer, Always In View
Cons: Territorial

Great fish, hardy easy to care for. Willingly accepts all foods, frozen, pellet, flake, seaweed, nori. Should have substantial vegetable in diet to combat HLE. Should be one of the last fish added as it is territorial and will harrass new additions. Needs lots of linear space as it is a very fast swimmer who needs length to satisfy this aspect of their personality. Recommend at least a 48" tank length with lots of rock work to swim around and through to create interest for this fish. Fish loses color at night and regains it with the light in the morning......has a favorite sleeping space.
