General Notes: The Cleaner shrimp is one of the most popular shrimps in the aquarium trade. It is a scarlet red base color with a single white stripe running down its back. The Cleaner shrimp gets its name from the fact that is will regularly clean parasites off of the other fish and even the hobbiests arm. It is a relatively hardy fish that is an excellant choice for both the beginning and advanced hobbiests.

This is a very good shrimp for beginners. Do not be concerned if you see the \"body\" of your shrimp floating around in your tank because it is the carapace, which is shed by the shrimp every couple weeks (or so). This shedding replaces any damaged limbs and/or antennae, so do not be worried if your shrimp sustains minor extremity damage. The Skunk Cleaner is interesting to watch when it eats--it frantically swims in an attempt to find food, then mows it down. Because the shrimp\'s body is a yellowish transparent color, you can see bright colored food move down it\'s throat and into the shrimp\'s stomach. When this shrimp cleans another fish, it is amazing. The only time I have seen my shrimp clean is when my yellow watchman goby (whom I hope will be added to the Goby profiles in the future) was still alive. The fish totally submitted to the shrimp, allowing the shrimp to roll it like a log.

These cleaners are fun little shrimp. One thing which needs clarified is their cleaning behavior. There seems to be a misconception that these shrimp will somehow eat algae or detritus and that simply is not true. They will clean parasites off of fish but this is not a substitute for proper quarantine of any incoming animals. Overall, the cleaners are a great shrimp but one must be sure not to expect more than aesthetic beauty from them.

I have one of these in my 10G and its my favorite shrimp in the tank. Its fun to see him move around on the LR or coral.
