Description: Compatibility: Peaceful, Community
Maximum Size: 3"
Minimum Tank Size: 20g
Temperature: 72-84F
Diet: Omnivorous
Level of care: Medium
General Notes: Beautiful, peaceful fish that adds to any community-only aquarium over 20 gallons, however, it prefers planted tanks that provide open swimming space along with heavily planted sections for protection. Best kept in groups of a minumum of 3, though larger schools are better. Extremely delicate fish that prefers nitrates under 20 ppm and near-perfect water conditions. Not hardy - they are usually the first to die from a diseased tank - and many are known to die within the first days of purchase or for no known apparent reason. Not a good beginner fish due to mortality rate and high cost, but when alive they are stunning, especially when fins are displayed. Picture shows closed fins.

Pros: Amazing fins, nice colors, peaceful and active
Cons:

An awesome fish. Their displays of fins between the males makes for an impressive sight. Breeding colors are very intense, with gold reticulation on the body scales. They like to eat. Having more males than females encourages a lot of flaring and displays, but no aggression at all. I never once saw these fish truly "chase" each other or nip at each other - or anything else for that matter. They've got to be one of the most peaceful rainbow species. Females are a little dull, but that's to be expected. Don't let their small stature fool you, they really do need a lot of swimming space. They spend most of their days at the 2/3 level to top level of the tank.
