blackneontetra

Description: Compatibility: A peaceful schooling fish for a community tank with other similarly peaceful fish.
Maximum Size: 2.5 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 10G
Temperature: 72-82F
Diet: Omnivorous, accepts flake, live/freeze dried/frozen food.
Level of care: Easy, no special requirements.
General Notes: They are called "black neons" but in reality are not a true neon, although the two are very similar. Even though these fish dont require special conditions, a slightly acidic pH, a darker subdued tank (maybe with tannins in the water from driftwood and a darker substrate) and having a good sized group of these will bring out their colors and their activity level. They would also love to be in a planted tank. When stressed out their colors fade noticeably. Black neons are egg-scatterers who spawns fairly readily in open water (as long as you have the right water conditions for them) and their eggs take just over a day to hatch.

Pros: Nice coloration
Cons: Boring

These are pretty boring fish, even in a school. They do have very vivid colors, and stick out against green plants. I\'ve found them pretty hardy for tetras... 2 survived 6 months in an unheated tank.

Pros: Hardy, good looking, interesting fish
Cons: None

I have three black neon tetras that I\'m using to cycle my tank. They have survived an ich outbreak, rather high ammonia/nitrite levels, and temperatures fluctuating as much as 10 degrees a day for a few days. They look great under the light, and are always chasing each other around. Great beginner fish.

Pros: interesting coloration: black metallic stripe in combination with red "brows"; very hardy; active swimmers; peaceful; not a target for bullying
Cons: no personality; loose schooling; very hard to catch; do not brighten the tank as much as other neons

I like the fish mostly because I almost never had any problems with them. I am saying alsmost because 3 times over a year one of my 6 neons got some fungus-like growth. Two of them I cured very quickly by separating the affected fish in a bowl (it was summer time) and treating for 24 hr with Jungle Fungus Clear, then returning it to the main tank. One fish unfortunately died, I suspect because he was in the bowl longer than others and it was a little bit cooler.
Five remaining fish did not have any illnesses for almost a year. They eat everything and, honestly, I do not pay much attention to them because they are just living in their habitat without any problems and dramas unlike some other fish.

Pros: hardy, quick eater
Cons: nippy

Like most fish, the black neon tetra will stop schooling once it gets accustomed to your tank. I have a larger female that often picks as the smaller fish. Although, this is to determine picking order, sometimes she also nips at my platy.

This fish will not get too big and actually is a nice change to the ever popular regular neon tetras.

Pros:
Cons:

I have 5 of these and they are extremely peaceful. They hang out in the upper half of the tank just above the plants. My otos seem to school with them sometimes.
