Description:
|
Compatibility: Should not be kept with any fish small enough to be eaten, or very boisterous fish
Maximum Size: 12-15 in.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons
Temperature: 72-77F
Diet: Carnivore, flakes are good for younger specimens, pellets for older ones
Level of care: Easy to care for given the right conditions, but most who purchase a young oscar are unaware of the species potential size
General Notes: Pairs form a nuclear family and despite their size, are generally peaceful. They are boisterous during spawning and are burrowers when courting and rearing fry. Needs a tank bottom of deep sand with a few large rocks. Plants should be potted. Water quality must be maintained as these are very messy eaters and can quickly foul the water with uneaten food and waste.

I have two oscars, one Tiger (Onyx) and one Albino Tiger (Pearl). I got them both at the same time and are different as day and night. Onyx is the boss of the tank, and eats first, and Pearl always eats last. Due to this, Onyx has grown twice as big as Pearl. (they are about 7\" and 4\")
I don\'t know if it\'s a trait for oscars but one of mine is a picky eater. Onyx won\'t eat pellets, only flakes. The other will eat just about anything. (Maybe because he\'ll take what he can since Onyx takes all the feeders...)
They are awesome companions and are very quick to grow. I suggest anyone with an oscar be prepared to get at least a 55 gallon. I have my two juveniles in a 55 but I will upgrade when the time comes.

Love this fish. It grows quickly, and in a way, acts as if it were your pet dog. I have a tiger oscar that i\'ve had for about 7 months now. It always knows when I come into the room, and it is never scared of me. It knows when Im about to feed it and it eats anything. It isn\'t aggressive to other fish, unless they are small enough to eat. The only bad thing is that its a messy eater. Since it eats a lot, it does spit back some food up. After feeding it crickets, it will spit back up the shells. A fun fish to watch, it will follow your hand across the tank and every time I walk up to the tank and get close, it looks up to the surface of the water expecting me to drop some food in. Very fun and easy to keep cichlid

My boyfriend bought a tiger oscar, his name is Romulus. I hated the thing until yesterday because he wouldn\'t eat when I fed him, only when my boyfriend fed him. But other than that he was an awesome fish. Finally yesterday I got him to eat for me. Unfortunately we didn\'t have any \"real\" meat for him, but we discovered that he likes bologna?! And it\'s true, it\'s almost like having a pet dog, he comes to the top of he tank every time u open it up. Oh and as for the mess, we put a red tail black shark in the tank (Romulus is still small) and he eats whatever the oscar spits up.

oscars are very friendly fish once they get to know there owners. they can be handfed and often picked up and patted. they have there very own little personalities and like to re-arrange there tank to how they want it. my ones play with ping pong balls and golf balls and like to play with each other. they are very close to each other and snuggle up together when it goes dark.anything which can fit in there mouths...will end up in there mouths. i love oscars and angels and i hope alot of ppl out there do to:thumbsup:

definately more of a pet than a fish. Mine (albino tiger) dug a whole in the gravel and when i turn the light off at nght for it to go to "sleep", it will lay sideways in the hole and sleep. i rarely use this word, but its so cute.
