Description:
|
Compatibility: Peaceful, community, schooling fish
Maximum Size: 2 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 10G
Diet: accept flake and enjoy frozen or live foods to mix things up a bit.
Level of care: Easy keepers, if you can find them.
General Notes: Also known as Cochu's Blue Tetra, this is one of the more hard to obtain tetra species. They aren't common in the aquaria trade because they dont do to well during shipping, but they are some nice looking tetras. Their color comes out best when kept in a tank with darker substrate and are fed a variety of foods.

Gorgeous coloring, not boring but not aggressive

I finally found these at a store I dont frequent very often. The picture on this profile was the first one I\'ve seen online that actually does them any justice. They have the most gorgeous blue coloring, but you can only see it when they\'re in motion from the right angle. The ones I have also have a white tip on most of their fins that looks really classy.
Schooling fish, so if you do get some...make sure to get at least 5 or so of them. I ended up with 9 (all that the store had) and they seem happy. I\'m feeding them a high quality baked flake food (tetramin pro baked crisps) which they seem to love, and will mix it up with bbs and other treats from time to time. They readily accept flake and have been voracious eaters.
The profile says that they dont do well during shipping, but mine seemed to do ok. They were pretty pale for awhile...but seemed to have their full color back the next morning.

Pros:

A fish of delicate beauty and a nice compliment to any planted tank.

Cons:

Not really as much of a schooling fish as I had expected. Did better in numbers of at least 10 but became comfortable and curious enough to scout the aquarium singly. Will quickly regroup when spooked.

A wonderful fish overall! They're easy to feed and perhaps a little too easy since they have a tendency to get a very bloated appearance when fed too much.
IMO they are gregarious and prefer eachother's company but don't exactly school as neons would. They'll wonder about on their own and regroup when they are frightened. In smaller numbers can be quite aggressive toward eachother. The aggression is not serious. Chasing only.
Their colors must be witnessed in person to fully appreciate. They set off any tank, be it a clear or tannin-stained. Perfectly fit for a peaceful community.
