Description: Name: Black Beard Algae (BBA)
Other Names: Red Algae, Black Brush Algae
Symptoms: Quarter-inch-long (0.5 cm) hairs closely packed together. Appears dark green, black or dark red. Grows on plant leaves, gravel, decorations, equipment, and especially driftwood. Often found on the edges of leaves. Fast Spreading.

Causes:
Low or fluctuating levels of carbon dioxide (CO2)

Treatments:
1. Redo the DIY CO2 mixture
2. Increase CO2 production
3. Remove affected leaves
4. 50-75% water change
5. Clean anubias or hardy stem plants with 20% hydrogen peroxide and water mixture. Dip for 10 minutes and rinse well. DO NOT DIP ROOTS!
6. Siamese Algae Eaters will eat this algae on continual basis until the cause is fixed

Pros:
Cons:

Siamese algae eaters are the only algae eating fish that will eat this particular kind of algae, and they have many look alikes, so be sure you know what you're getting.

Cons:

I bought an otocat to clear out this type of algae and he loved it- he cleared off an entire piece of driftwood in a few days. He seemed to love it .
