Green Spot Algae
Other Names: none
Symptoms:
Green Algae on decorations and glass of tank. It is usually hard to the touch. Usually sign of healthy tank and parameters if algae are truly green. Green Algae can grow back in clean tank within three weeks. If algae turns red or brown or different than green it is usually indicator of water quality issue.
Causes:
Too much lighting, low phosphates, low CO2 , too much uneaten food waste, fish waste, decay of dead fish and plant matter.
Treatments:
Clean surfaces
1.
Lower lighting (8-10 hrs)
2.
Increase CO2 production and
3.
Dose with phosphates
4.
Reduce feeding times and amounts
5.
Regular water changes with Reverse Osmosis(RO) water
6.
UV Sterilizer
7.
Remove dead fish or decaying materials promptly
8.
Leave one decoration unclean to control regrowth and spreading of algae
9.
Install an external Canister Filter
Note:
The reason for leaving an algae contaminated item in tank when cleaning is to provide controlled amount to compete with for nutrients. In a clean tank it will spread rapidly, with a controlled amount present it will have to compete to outgrow the existing amount, thus making re-growth slower or nonexistent.
