Description: Name: Brown Algae
Other Names: Diatoms, Gravel Algae, Silica Algae

Symptoms: Starts out as brown patches which rapidly spread across entire tank. Easily removed, does not come off in large slimy sheets like BGA. Will dissipate on its own eventually. Most common among newly established tanks.

Causes:
1. Silicates
2. Low lighting
3. Biological filter not established
4. Low oxygen levels

Treatments:
1. Time
2. Water changes
3. Otocinclus or plecostomus fish
4. Manual removal; wipe off surfaces and clean gravel well
