Description:

Name: Blue Green Algae (BGA)
Other Names: Slime Algae, Smear Algae
Symptoms: Very Slimy, comes off in sheets. Rapid growth covering all surfaces in tank. Unpleasant odor. Bubbles form within the algae.
Causes:
1. High levels of organic waste
2. Nitrates dropping out
3. Low and/or no circulation
4. Overfeeding
5. Decaying plant material
Treatments:
1. Physical removal
2. Clean tank thoroughly
3. Partial water changes
4. Reduce feeding
5. Increase circulation
6. Remove decaying materials
7. 200 mg erythromycin phosphate per 10 gallons water. (may damage beneficial bacteria)

using Erythromycin definitely killed the algae off in my tank, and i didnt have any spikes in ammonia/nitrItes
